A diamond ring bought at a car boot sale over 30 years ago is expected to achieve up to £350,000 at auction.
£350,000 ... Wow.
The owner bought the piece of jewellery, in the 1980's, thinking that it was a piece of dress jewellery. What's amazing is that she wore it every day for 3 decades. She was wearing an 'exceptionally sized' 26 carat, cushion shaped white diamond from the 19th Century ... whilst vacuuming the front room. Incredible stuff. Part of the confusion came about due to the sheer size of the diamond but also to do with the old style of cut. The antique cushion shape doesn't reflect the light back as much as it would from more modern cutting. Back then the cutters would have worked more with the natural shape to conserve as much weight as possible rather than making it as 'brilliant' as possible.
David and I are considering taking a trip over to Polmadie this weekend. We're pretty certain that we won't be finding a Super Sized cushion shaped white diamond ring anytime soon though : )
As always there are plenty of lovely diamonds (of all sizes) over here at our Clarkston Showroom. Pop in to sample the Hodgkinson Experience.
